Has anyone done Doom 3 versions (higher res, with bumpmaps and such) of textures from classic Doom? I'd be interested especially in those rusty metal vertical bands and those textures with gargoyles or skulls.

Unlikely. None of Classic Doom ports properly support normal mapping, otherwise you would have a variety of different textures to choose between. Best bet is model them and then bake off.

The only other option is to check out some of the 'Classic Doom' mods for D3 that are around and see how they solved the problem.

I think you read his question the other way around :)

He meant from Doom/Doom 2 to Doom 3.

At least that is how it's worded. If my english skills are rubbish I'll crawl back under a rock and continue mapping.

I think tea monster meant that since none of the Doom ports support bump mapping, no one has bothered making high res Doom textures with normal maps, unlike Quake, which has a high res texture pack with normal maps because some of the more popular ports support it.

Oh yeah clearly got what he meant :)

I was merely referring to the original question in the OP

The problem with recreating the original textures in high res formats with normals and spec is that they'll look a bit odd. Back in the day you could get away creatively with a lot because of the low res nature of everything, trying to interpret what they actually are in to modern technologies may seem a bit off after you've done the conversion. Unless you went with some non-logical art style which Doom basically has :)

Sikkpin was right. If someone had created textures for Doom 1 in 'next-gen' format, then the OP could have adapted them for use in Doom 3.

I guess I can start with the JDoom high-res textures of Doom, but I'll have to edit them so they have separate diffuse and normal maps. Some of them appear cartoony or too colourful though. Maybe I can make the high-res GSTONE textures from classic Doom fit with Doom 3's own hell bricks, that would be cool.

Also I'm not sure if the gargoyle heads from Doom 1 will look very well in Doom 3 as mere textures, right? Unless I apply one of these fancy Doom 3 graphics mods, such as that parallax occlusion mapping effect, or make static models out of them, so they stand out...

Try to have a look at the Doom Reborn mod. I never downloaded and played it, but you can clearly see Doom 1 textures converted to Doom 3 on the screenshots.

You can feed the Jdoom texture pack through something like Crazy Bump to get your normal maps. It is a quick and dirty solution compared to the proper way, which is modelling textures and baking them, but it should get you up and running.

Or, as I and others have stated, check out some d3 mods.
