There were few things about "Quake 2" that I absolutely loved: the technology, q2dm1, q2dm3, QuArK and all the models made by Paul Steed.

Rest in peace.

Thank you for all the memories, work, and gaming goodness you’ve left behind, Paul. You will be missed but never forgotten.

I remember this image from the ID gallery at the end of Quake 2, when I first played it back then

Sad to hear about this.

Oh wow - that came out of nowhere!

Very sad indeed. Still miss his input on Doom3, he should have never gotten fired over it.

My sincere condolences to his family.

I have both editions of his books one can be found online here as an ebook at no charge for free:

I really liked his outlook on his way of thinking, he will be missed.

That was an excellent book from an excellent artist and I learned a lot from it. Infact I kind of feel like I learned a lot from him personally in a way, based on what I'd read. I guess it's the way it was written, very personal explanations to everything that made things really easy to understand, not just the hows but also the whys. Compared to other hypergeeky books I have, his was the warmest but also one of the most powerful.

To this day, the things it can teach an artist are so relevant, especially when it seems everyone can Zbrush, but hardly anyone can get an optimised textured in-game package together, to make use of it. The 1000s of hi-poly untextured weapon models out there, we've all seen them collect dust and be forgotten.

His work will live forever, I'm sure, as we get further away from it, the more we'll look back at those years as the most important years in 3D real-time entertainment, and the more we'll appreciate the larger, more valuable triangles, and the people involved in making them look as gorgeous as possible.

For some random reason, I looked up Paul Steed a few minutes ago to see what he has been up to and read that he passed away a few days ago. I was not expecting that. An incredible artist, his influence will be with us forever.
