9 megs? I was kind of expecting a hundred or so...
Also it has some code for expansion too.

It's only source code and mostly text; nine meg of code is more than enough! If you mean resurrection of evil when you say "Code for expansion" then yes of course it does. This release includes game, d3xp and idlib (the d3 sdk) as well as the engine code.

So there are no shadows facilities in this source code release. What's the point?

And John Carmack NEVER does patents. It's the one subject that gets him most angry if anyone brings it up. Enough said.

No the release certainly does support shadows, it just doesn't support Carmack's Reverse.

I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion, but you've completely misunderstood. :)

The patent prevented Id Software from releasing 4 lines of code that were written in a very specific way. John Carmack has "rewritten" that part of the code to achieve the same results but in a different way. I don't even think fully removing that part of the code would have completely removed shadows anyway, it only dealt with specific circumstances from my understanding.
