Don't think they look all too overwhelming, but the last time I've checked HL2 was about being fun to play instead of looking good...

Exactly. For one thing I got surprised with the simplicity of the game graphics/levels/models (except for the human characters themselves, which are top notch), but maybe that's because I've played much of D3. The sp game itself is what I'm looking forward to though so it's not like it matters that much.

It's one of those mixed bag games in terms of graphics. Some stuff (the water, faces) looks amazing, whereas other objects look like remnants of HL1, and people's bodies look to have about the same number of polys as their heads!

Sure, the lighting is dodgy in places (weird mix of dynamic & static lighting), but the textures are fairly neat, even if they are on slightly square geometry.

Still, PC Gamer UK kinda wimped out by giving it the same score as HL1 (96%), because then it's like saying it's neither better nor worse, and you have to really play it yourself to decide. If it was 95%, people would be slating it already, whereas if 97%, people would expect the most amazing game ever, better even the HL1. I think 96% is a 'safe' option for the reviewers, as much as it is an objective review of the game.

hl2 = highres textures.

lol, i know there will be more to it than just that. but i think the shelf life of the source engine will be limited. realtime lighting is the future. imo, source doesn't look much bettter then the latest games using the quake3 engine.

i mean, just add a better story and more interactivity with the physical world with the doom3 engine and you'll beat hl2 every time. maybe we'll get some of that with the d3 mission pack or quak4...

not bashing hl2. i'm its will be great. just bashing the tech :lol:

Well, I believe that pretty much anything that HL2 has that Doom 3 doesn't (and there will probably be a fair bit to begin with) is likely to end up being modded into Doom 3 anyway.

For instance, vehicles. Half-Life 2 has them, Doom 3 doesn't, but that's likely to change pretty soon.
