Got my copy of Half-Life 2 today and was utterley impressed.

But what do you guys think of CS Source.

Is it just me or does the movement feel a little faster and is jumping more fun.

It's like CS but better, I'm in love with it already :).

Absolutely right, I DO live in the wrong part of the world! You see, we have a "language police" here and the game *is* available on DVD at the store but in French version only. The CD's were the original English version so I went for CD's instead.

No problem tho, they installed pretty fast... That is.. after I figured out that you MUST install Counter-Strike otherwise the install barfs on the 4th CD saying it can't find hl2.icon or something.

I only briefly looked at it... at 1280 x 1024 resolution, so far the visuals look stunning! No bumpmapping or specular lighting like in Doom3 but nevertheless the game looks great.... And the best part is... I can SEE without having to use a flashlight!!!! Whohoo! :D :D

Im sure that hl2 used bump mapping technology.

If you watched one of the gamespy e3 vids from last years and listened to the commentry and what they were showing it said bump mapping.

Not like doom 3 though i give u that.

As far as I can determine bump mapping (both height and normal) are all but totally absent, I've seen very, VERY weak bumps on one or two rock wall textures so far, and that's all.

Speculation of course because I haven't rushed out to buy the game but from what I played of the beta I'm pretty sure they couldn't make much use of normal maps considering the way the game is lit.

It's kinda like Doom 3 when you fill a room with one big ambient light. Everything is nice and bright but all the detail gets washed out.

Specular mapping is used one one or two places too in CS:S that I could see.

bump and spec maps are both there. look at the video stress test if you have it. I just got to play a bit of CS:source so I havent played half life 2 yet. I like the graphics better then doom 3 :P

and I dont have a DVD player. heh.

The video stress test is a stress test and as such doesn't represent the actual game very well :). However in some of the really dark areas of HL2 both bump and specular maps are widely used (to make the flashlight look less cheap).

the thing I have noticed though in counter strike at least, is that alot of the textures are just flat color maps, with static specularity and bump. UGLY. I wish they wouldnt use these, obviously the game supports better ones. Its just sporadic. :?
