I've just installed blender 2.58 and the latest versions of der_tons importer/exporter and can't seem to get them working. I've installed the scripts as addons under user-preferences only for the scripts not to show up in my available addons. I'm not sure if I've done something wrong or if they're not compatible with the latest blender.

Yeah they don't. Try this one - http://www.katsbits.com/smforum/index.php?topic=167.0 (I've not yet had a chance to test it in 2.58 but it does work or 2.57b. Best to post MD5 question over there now for 2.5 series.

Thanks Kat, I did get one earlier in the day off your site that appeared to work (didn't actually test the result in game) but I'm in need of the importer as well

For the time being I've installed an older version of blender that the scripts work with.
