 Post subject: Armor.. stuff. Normal Map help, basically.

I'm working on some armor in GMAX (i'm a newbie to 3D, so forgive the poor quality). I've got a high-res model (35,000 poly) and a low-res model (2k). I was just wondering if some kind soul could give me help with.. whatever it is i'm supposed to do now to make a normal map from the high res and project it onto the low-res one.

As you can see, I have alot of work to do on it, i'd just like the information.. thanks a million to whoever answers.

I've not yet tried to model high res stuff like this yet - working on low poly stuff - but I have looked at the capabilities of gmax and I'm not 100% sure it can do what we need it to for this next generation of stuff. The only thing I could say is to have a really thorough rummage thru the user reference guide (in the help menu) and see if you can spot anything about normal maps and what not and or searh thru sparks at discreet to see if there are any plugins around. MAX (and gmax) appears to be being left out of the loop for D3...

.. models look pretty good to me btw..!

Either that or if you save the model as .ase

yeh you can with max, I ment gmax really, although there aren't any converters/plugins yet for max (I've not seen any yet) to be able to use the normal maps so you'd probably have to do what BNA mantioned and export as ase or something

So my best bet would be to get max? =\
Or get lightwave.. but lightwave hates me.
How much is a basic copy of 3DS with char studio?
A basic copy of LW 7.5 or 8?

You have to be a student for the educational copies...

The 'Educational' version of max 5.1 is $499. Which is a bargain if you're going to use it for educational purposes (modding, learning), and want to own a legal copy.

I'd check around for other software if you'd like, I haven't been able to find a Maya Educational, or a LW educational version though.
