I'd like to make a couple of requests to whomever creates these videos.
  1. Play at a lower resolution to keep the framerate well above that of the final video (obviously keep the both the game and video resolutions equal)
  2. Ditch all audio. The video is just a wander round the map, I don't need to listen to some old rocker, or hear the gun reload. I'd much rather have a smaller download.
Looking great guys.

I disagree.

Please keep using music for the videos.. I mean compressed audio is only around 3mb haha

Hey thanks! I have been looking at this project for months and always had comments and suggestions, but until now never actually thought I should post. While I have limited knowledge with this specific engine, I'd like to think my grasp of it, and modding/engines in general is enough to actually be helpful in some way.

Regarding the more detailed ambient lighting I was talking about earlier. It shouldn't be that hard to implement. You'd just need 3 versions of most textures with a material something like:

textures/euro/block3/bank/bank1
{
qer_editorimage textures/euro/block3/bank/signs/bank_sign_d.tga

diffusemap textures/euro/block3/bank/signs/bank_sign_d.tga
specularmap textures/euro/block3/danteuk/gray/gray256_s.tga
bumpmap textures/euro/block3/danteuk/gray/gray_local.tga

{
blend add
map textures/euro/block3/bank/signs/bank_sign_d.tga
red global0 - .1
green global1 - .1
blue global2 - .1
}
}

Will this triple the amount of texture memory used with multiple textures referencing the same images?

I am willing to try this on the parts of the map with finalised geometry when I get time, maybe on the weekend.

I also think global2 should be made slightly larger than the rest to give the ambient areas a very slight blue tint as the sky is a rather strong blue. Add this to making the sunlight slightly yellow should also add atmosphere and colour to the map without having to do any dramatic changes.

Mood? Old-time rockers and disco music don't put me in the Doom mood. There is no pacing and no timing. At one point, it sounds like 3 different songs playing over the top of each other.

These videos are not about moods or entertainment. They're tech-demos. I download them to see what progress has been made, not listen to Pearl-Jam.

Anyway, it's your guys project. It was just a suggestion/request.

The music is showing the progress being made. It showed the winamp plugin thing which can be put on any gui surface. That's a pretty cool achievement.

I liked the music and feel it added to the overall video, if you don't like it, hit mute.

It was nice to see my winamp in action.

idiom:
I'm glad you like'd it, I've merged your water code with my winamp code and will shortly post a .pk4 with windoze and linux binaries.

I noticed the sun/moon movement script is disabled by default. Even without it i get 3-5 FPS (true, i have a readeon 9000). I enabled it just to see, and i get a 10 sec slideshow.

The map is really excelent, really great ideas. But you'll have to own at least a GF 6800 Ultra and a couple of Gb of ram if you want to play it with decent fps and the sun/moon script enabled.

7 FPS minimum for me, generally 25+ FPS. Quite acceptable for an unoptimised tech demo.

I am running:
ATI Radeon 9600 XT 256MB
1GB RAM &
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
(these are the bits that matter overall for this discussion)

Note that this is an AUD1000 rig, about 500-700 US - not over the top.

My only criticism is the loading GUI. Although it is nice to be able to run the demo without loading the map via the console, it has disabled the settings options. My gamma and/or brigthness makes things look washed out and overly bright. Pressing Escape only allows me to restart the map - not adjust settings. Of course I could do this via the console, but most people wont have a clue about the commands.

Aside from that - lovely. Well done all who have contributed... :D

With the sun/moon script on?

Note that you have to modified the file euro_4build.script and change the line

Code:
float enableScript = 0;

to

Code:
float enableScript = 1;

Okay, from what I've read...

People with 128MB ATI cards... are you the ones specifically seeing overheating issues?

The only folks with ATI cards I've read about that can run the map successfully tend to have 256MB cards.

Can folks with 128MB ATIs who have had trouble and those who have not had any trouble (besides really low FPS) post here and mention your system specs... namely, CPU, memory, vid & mem.

Thanks,

G

If ya don't like it, mute it. ;)

EDIT:

Also, to those above complaining about performance:
It's a test. It's not optimized. You were warned numerous times. ;)

Hmm... with those specs, you should never go below 18 FPS, I don't think... or at least, on my 6800GT and 6800 at work (both around 3GHz and 1GB RAM), I get those as my low-end FPS scores. Both are set at high quality, one is @ 1024x768 and the other is @ 1280x1024.

I solved the Problem. re downloaded the map and it worked. now it runs great for such a huge un-optimised map! you guys are great! The buggy is very fun to play with! I hope you can still increase the performance to show all those hl2 noobs what d3 is able to do... propably you could also use this technique for the textures:

Oh my goodness. The mute button, of course. Why didn't I think of that?

Oh wait. Does muting it mean my download will be smaller?

If you want to see how to use audio/music effectively, go watch the Tribes "Legacy" video. It's one of the best gameplay videos I have ever seen.
