Well I just got the DVD Special Edition of Quake 4 and have been disappointed with my experience with it thus far.

So, after doing much forum hoping, I'm asking for any tips and/or help with my Quake issues.

1. Its SO slow to load anything - to get to the Main menu takes almost 10 minutes...to load a map - Single player - takes nearly 2 minutes. You can only go away to make coffee so many times

2. It crashes to desktop on boarding the USS Hanibal...no game error message but XP send error report does come up. I have the qconsole.log file being created and that does not appear to indicate an error occurring.

My computer specs are:
Asus Z92T laptop
Turion TL52 CPU
RAM 2048
HDD 100GB
Gfx Go7600 dedicated 256MB
WinXP SP2
AV ZoneAlarm (full)

Once a map is loaded it plays smoothly with NO issues - great fun to play.

Any pointers/help appreciated...

Update: Adding +disconnect to game shortcut has reduced the load time to the main menu to about 2 minutes.

This will be caused by your virus scanner. Most likely Computer Associates eTrust Anti-Virus, as that is the one most people reporting this issue use.

i've had issues with the newest ZoneAlarm too. I ditched it, went with a different one & most problems went away.

Thanks for that, I've seen posts regarding AV interfering - all regarding CA product.

I use ZoneAlarm Internet Suite - fully paid up - so changing is not an option. I do use ZA game mode - set to Accept - when playing any game that does not require the internet along with setting the Internet Lock. I'll contiune to play with the AV line.

Any ideas regarding the crash at the Hanibal entry...I would like to finish the game :D

Seem to have found a solution - annoying as hell but simple...by changing my desktop resolution to 1024x768x32 or 800x600x32 everything seems to have come right...much faster to load and no crashing.

My preferred resolution for my desktop is 1152x864x32 on a 19" monitor

is that an LCD? I've never noticed that res on my 19" CRT. that could be the problem.

No, its a CRT monitor.

As a developer its quite useful to be running a slightly higher resolution than that required for the application being developed.

But I would say that it is a non-standard resolution, along with the many others the slider shows up.

Unfortunately it has not solved all my issues, I can load Strogg Medical Facility map; which I assume has a lead in animation. I click to continue the screen goes black and I get nothing more, except what sounds to be the background sound loop. I've had to console load the next map, Walker, to continue playing the game, from an earlier save game before the Medical Facility map loads.
