After lotsa time, i finally managed to get Quake 4 on my PC. However, as it's quite old, i would like to know if it's going to run or not, and if it does run what should the configurations be for a superb performance.

My PC.

PIV 2.26
RAM 2GB
256 Video card Nvidia FX5500

thank you in advance.

Not to be pedantic, but if you have Q4 on your PC how about running it? That will tell you if it will run or not.

That might be pushing it. Perhaps it'll run ok on low or med quality, not sure.
Like sim said, just run it. :D

It will run, I had that card for a while. On 640x480 and low settings, and it will lag, but run it will. Same for Prey.

Doom 3 will run acceptably (can play, won't look good). ETQW won't run well at all on that, though.

I suggest getting an AGP 6-series geforce on ebay (6600 preferably). idtech 4 games will run fine on that.

Here are some cvars that should help get it running better, you can then tweak to your liking instead of just using "low quality" in the menu settings:-
Code:
image_downSize "1"
image_downSizeBump "1"
image_downSizeBumpLimit "512"
image_downSizeLimit "512"
image_downSizeSpecular "1"
image_downSizeSpecularLimit "512"
image_filter "GL_LINEAR"
image_ignoreHighQuality "1"
image_anisotropy "0"
image_roundDown "1"
image_useAllFormats "1"
image_useCache "1"
image_useCompression "2"
image_useNormalCompression "2"
image_useNormalCompressionLoadDDSForPal "1"
image_useOfflineCompression "1"
r_multiSamples "0"
r_swapinterval "0"

You use these in a CFG file when running the game. You may need to use "vid_restart" in the console when applying them for the first time. There's a few more you can use to get even better performance out of the game(s).
Good luck.

well, well, well... it seems that without shadows and reflexions the game is quite playable in 800x600 and high quality (don't u ask me why, i mean it got some tweaks in big spaces and overilluminated corners, but it's normal in other situations).

Howerver, in low quality (obviously) FPS do increment a lot.

P.D. And doom3 runs perfectly in High Quality
