I hear about this too, it's sad, but it's business. I'm sure Carmack layoff many good artist that work on simple but important things like stamps for environment, paint textures, draw concept arts, create and rig 3d models or just maintenance all that from hardware administration point of view. It's like - You done Your work here, product is finished so we do not need You no more. I'm sure also that Carmack keep at Id old team, people responsible for decisions, who know how engine work. Sad is fact that those people put a lot of love into their work, let's hope that They will find fast another great work.

I do not know how to manage such big projects like making games, but I'm sure I will try to be in touch with those people - they know how to work with idtech and they do not need to learn everything once more.

I'm sure most of the lay-offs are QA personnel. This is pretty much business as usual.

I wouldn't call it "hire and fire" because I'm betting people are hired to work on a specific job/game. More like a contract position but an employe. Technically it would be hire & fire though.

He's the one responsible for games and more, basically. Probably not limited to just ID's games too. Correct me if i'm wrong. Well, he's doing a shitty job, plus the sales aren't exelent either. Old frienships is saving his ass now.

Mhh, from what i know he was start doing maps for Doom 2 and later for Doom 3, well, i can say there is other map creators far better for Doom 3 from the mods and maps scene, but well, i don't have any reason for think he not do its job good, i don't think is him that made that big mistakes on Rage, and from what i see now some people from Rage had taken out from its job so i think the untalented people is out now from Id, i hope at least, because i have big big hopes for new Doom 4.

Tim was the lead designer for both Doom 3 and Rage, well, creative director for Rage. Basically, he has the final say with what goes into the game and what doesn't, how things work, game play mechanics, art style, etc. Essentially the same as a director of film.

I think he made some mistakes but overall he does good work on Id, i see many interviews and he seem to really believe on keep a classic style gameplay while using the latest engine.

Because he's "old-school"? Leave all that new-fangled stuff to Valve, frankly - they're better at it. Their "Portal" series is amazing, I'm a huge fan of that.

But I love Doom 3 because of it's mixture of old-school and new-school. Rage, not so much.

They might blame this on Piracy.

Personally, I blame all the billionaires on Wallstreet for the tough economic times.

I blame it on that D3 & Rage took so long & were lackluster games. Can't spend 13 years on 2 titles and have that be the best income you got.

I'm pretty sure that several of the guys at id would qualify as a millionaire guy on wallstreet.

The delays and drawn out continued development of those game are a possibility.

But I was referring more too the Bilderberg Group on Wallstreet.
