Hello there,

i am new to this forum, so be a little bit of patient with me ;)
I searched the forum but hadn“t find a topic regarding D3 and its GPLed sources to recreate the whole game from scratch like they did it with Q3 (OpenArena).

Is there any activity to make a fully GPL version of D3 (including textures, models, scripts...)?

I already saw a lot of work done here (giant HD map pak, a shader pak and even the D3F/Q4F mod was released), but many of this brilliant peaces are already lost deep inside the web.

Is there any attempt to collect all the work and make some kind of (open source) collection to the D3 engine? The ioDoom3 team is working on the coding side, but what about the assets?

I think opendoom3 would be a little bit more difficult to do. It has a bit more of a story than quake 3. So to get it close to doom3 would be very difficult without actually using the original story. Not really about assets. I mean if you want anyone here on doom3world to make something for you most likely we will.

I am currently busy creating assets but with a different objective. Wanting to use some of those in my own project but will release some of them for people here to use.(Not anything impressive)

What I would like to see is more completely new games but that would take some time to do.

Forget it. Yes Openarena did a (somewhat mediocre) job of recreating Quake 3 but doing the same for doom 3 is going to take 3 times the man hours simply because of the type of assets involved.

The closest we could get is if one of the big mod teams (Hexen, Ruiner, Darkmod, Square Pixel etc..) released their game as open source. That would in fact be better. Why recreate what's already been done?

So you could play D3 mods w/o owning D3 (like OA). :D

It can't ever happen with D3 not because it's a big job but because the mods depend in the stock scripts that D3 came with. If you won't have a monster that works the same as the stock game then the map/mod that uses that monster won't work. Doom, Q1/2/3 all didn't have this problem. In Q3A the AI works exactly the same with a GPL compile as with a retail copy, in D3 that will be near impossible.
