but Beth soft is mod-friendly when You enter Their blog You can see support for mod community, video tutorials how to use tools or highlight best mods and hear players about bugs. Even if Fallout3 got some bugs it got also a lot of new mods, new stuff to do and see. Sadly id soft do not follow that path.

You guys can't really blame Id for not updating the community on whats going on, remember all information released about on going projects have to get authorized by Zenimax, odds are they think its in there best interest to keep us in the dark...not Id. Also the toolset just wasn't designed to work on a end users PC(to get the full power out of the editor and its tools you really need a renderfarm for your compiles), there probably bringing the tools to useable enough state where users can start to knock out more than simply gameplay changes.

2gb of ram with a geforce 9900 gt won't cut it with the Rage tools.

So Beth can say whatever it want's but id not? If I'm right Zenimax got those two companies so rules should be same for those two. I know Skyrim will have soon some dlc, but Beth do not talk about it, still they talk about game and stuff they can do for fans like trees You can plant, houses You can build, improving weather system, etc. - those are stuff about path and mods. While id seems to be following path - we made game, now we do not care about it and what happens with our fans. I remember John Carmack was talking once that if Rage will be huge success there will be more dlc and I remember that game do not get only high scores in reviews. Does he take all money he earn and hide in his room like little crying boy because someone say something bad and now he have no mood for work? Carmack is a great man with a vision and great ideas, but he lack of mind for business. Now only games with Call of Duty and Battlefield in title can be "great" games that make a lot of money (also game like Halo/Killzone if we take only one system), but even those titles have fanboys and haters, it's normal. Sometimes someone might do not like what You do, but it is not the reason to surrender and abandon project, ID soft should work harder and what is more important - show community that they still care. We have youtube, twitter, facebook and another internet tools to communicate. Why other developers like Blizzard/Valve/Beth understood that making good game is only half of success while other half is supporting it in right way while ID do not?

The other three dev's you mentioned makes lots of cash from non-direct game sales too. Valve is a publisher (and buys a as many IP's as EA or Activision do), Blizzard is owned by Activision & has a subscriber service with WoW & Beth is using a well known franchise based off an older engine and has multiple studios working on the franchise. id's the new boy in (Zenimax) town, they need to prove they've got what it takes.

id's good but they're good at doing what they're good at, and they're not doing that. Both Beth, Blizzard & Valve are doing what they're good at (making RPG's, creating a rich lore & business, respectively). id went a different direction and it didn't work as well as they thought it would.

Man, I start to sound like some angry fanboy :)
I'm just mad because I see great game that have a lot of potential. I have same feelings when SplashDamge say Brink is going to be only multiplayer style game. I hope ID will prove they worth.

@Friar - Valve actually isn't a publisher. They are just a development company and digital distribution marketplace owner(via Steam). They only self publish their own titles and only distribute through Steam. They use other publishers for brick and morter distribution(Sierra, EA).

They also don't purchase IP's. They purchase mod teams with promising ideas and create IP's off of that talent(portal, l4d, dota, TF).

all I know is that the communication from id is equal zero.
either they say nothing or they say bullshit.(specially mr.willits)

I just played through Alan Wake...man that is a great game ! and a perfect example of a perfect port.
it is no port actually, you got all the option you want, the game maxed looks and feels fantastic but more importantly the devs are active on their forums and even on the steam forums.

they answer question, listen to suggestion and then you have the new stuff in the next patch within a few weeks...

they offer special prices...I already bought american nightmare for 10 bucks because I own AW...that is just awesome business...

that is the way to go and it shows that communication with devs is possible and all those companies that keep silent and don't give a fuck about their customers are full of shit.

I buy such a well crafted product like Alan Wake without any hesitation...I am glad to support such devs...

id should take a note and learn.....period.

If we talk about devs that care about their customers even after release of game I must admit that staff of Frozenbyte is awesome. I buy Trine about year ago and I noticed that I have voices/lector in English and text in Polish (Polish distributor translate it), there was no option to choose language on setup or in game. I ask on forum about how to change text into English and next day I have on my mail file and instruction where to put it. That was fast and professional. Some time ago I also noticed that game got one additional free level that's installed with patch. Frozenbyte even do Linux ports of their own games and support them - You know Linux got much more different versions than Windows and some stuff might work or might not.

Maybe there is different half of id software community and fans? Maybe they use different forums and there is communication? You know, there is a lot of people who attend at QuakeCon's.

Now that I'm thinking of it: a deal about id and Valve would be a really big thing.
I know this is science fiction, dudes, but just imagine  The makers joining one of the very last independent studio: don't you think it would be better ?

ps. I don't really have that much of a bad view about Bethesda, but come on: all we see right now is just Skyrim stuff & a small update about HTML5 Wolfenstein thingy

I seriously don't know what they were doing at id. YOu can look anywhere (official twitter, bethesda forums/blog etc.) there is nothing going on at all. what are they doing right now? In the past the told how much the company has grown, so many developers etc., that the new idtech5 content creation pipeline is so much better and faster now for artist than idtech4. on what are they working? no news on doom4, rage completely abandoned, there are TWO people actively working on QuakeLive. where are all the devs? what are they doing?

Probably silently working. They admittedly talked too early on Doom 3 and RAGE. Hopefully they learned a lesson from that and won't talk about Doom 4 until maybe just months before a solid release date.

They said in the QuakeCon demonstration that it was faster. That to make a "believable looking parking lot scene" took a half a day for one artist to create (or something like that). It was one of the selling points of idTech5.

Everything I've said is based on what Carmack said mixed with my own experiences with VT, I like how you paraphrased what I said that actually made me laugh :P.

Can you link to the vid or article were that was said? I'm not doubting you I just want to see the full scope of the context in which it was said.

The key takeaway was the importance of communication - with those that will help you make the game, then sell it, and ultimately those that buy and play it. If one of those groups is overlooked, the project will suffer as a result, and while Willits admits he got Rage’s announcement wrong, he’s not likely to do it again. “You’ll learn more from failure,” he said, “than you ever will from success.”
importance of communication LMFAO

Every time he opens that dumb mouth, gems just pour out.

“Marketing folks are pretty smart. They’ve got MBAs, they spend their time studying games.”

But hey, the devs enjoyed it because they got a trophy... we're going to be printing bills!

Watch the QC07 idTech5 demonstration vids where they are showing off idStudio. The entire thing is pretty much how the workflow is faster all the while letting the artists have complete freedom without worrying about budgets.

And, regardless of what's said in the video, virtual texturing should be faster as long as you have the tools to efficiently work with it. I mean it can't getting much faster than sculpting your geometry and then painting it directly with various stamps and brushes. The hard part is creating the tools that can do that, which idStudio supposedly can.
