Unbeknown to most, Epic was also showing its closest partners a first look at Unreal Engine 4, the studio’s next-generation development platform said to feature all of Samaritan’s enhancements, a new development pipeline, and a raft of new technology. Sadly, all footage and info was embargoed, preventing us from telling you about the demo’s stunning visuals and technological advances.

Today, that restriction was lifted, so below you’ll find an in-depth, technically-minded interview with Unreal Engine pioneer Tim Sweeney, two glorious HD videos, and two-dozen super-high-resolution screenshots that will give you your first proper look at the next-generation of videogame graphics. Please note, each asset was captured in real-time on a single GeForce GTX 680 and was in no way edited, Photoshopped, or pre-rendered.

It's nice!

If it was rendered on current average hardware I would be impressed. Otherwise I'm not. And what an ugly logo lol.

Very true.

I dislike the feeling of the Unreal engines, but id software would have been extremely well adviced to take a clue from Epic regarding the toolchain around idtech3 time.

That is where epic is smart about and they have good sense of bussiness too. From the begining of this gen (X360/ps3) they knew that it is the user freindly toolset that would draw the developer more than having fancy rendering engine.

I've seen the tools demo and this one and I think it's just gorgeous.
It's got everything I'd ever want to make a visceral and gory hack and slash game.

I think this engine might cure me from the D3 engine. :o

They finally got rid of UnrealScript which is nice, but really it just feels like its more polished rather than ground breaking tech.

No, really not. It's a very rich development suite with a myriad of functions and availabilities to make life easier for game artists.
Stuff doesn't need to be ground breaking to be very good, which this looks to be.

Real time editing, seamless switching back into the game without any kind of compiling, being able to compile gamecode while the game is running and seeing your changes real time, global illumination, colour bouncing, gorgeous tools for setting up animations and cinematics, true reflections, water displacement, a rich set of smart particle systems that Pixar could use 1-1 in any movie, etc..etc....

This is just very good stuff and it excites the hell out of me, for the first time in years. He was running through a room at 60 fps with a million particles in there, that's awesome.

Sad thing is, as far as the tools go, Serious Engine has had most of those abilities in there since 2001 and no one has ever given Croteam any praise for what they (I say they when it's really just one man, Alen Ladavac) do on the tech side. But as soon as Unreal Engine does it, people flip out.

I haven't heard too much about croteams tools, but the walkthrough vid for UE4 certainly screamed Crytek's sandbox to me. Not a bad thing if it makes development easier... it's a long way from radiant, that's for sure ;)
