Here's the free version, it has a limit of a 1000 polys, but you can just cut your object into parts and UV them separately (you have to do it that way anyway)
It literally produces perfect UV maps instantly, no work required.
In LW go to file-export and save your object as an .obj, load that into unfold3d, hit automap and export it out again. Smple as that.
Here's a more indepth tutorial for cutting complex or cylindrical objects into parts are indicating seams for unfold3d.
Given that UV mapping is the single most tedious job in the universe, this is the single most useful app I have ever seen.

That looks very similar to Blender's built-in LSCM Unwrap tool, which doesn't have any poly limits (as far as I know) and also has the advantage of not needing to export to an external program. You do have to learn Blender of course... :?

I tend to be lazy and use planar projections for most things, but I am only doing low-poly architectural stuff rather than characters.

Hey, any program that let's me unwrap a character in 15 minutes with no work, rather than several tedious hours, is fine by me.
Since you're only unwrapping the low poly model for game engines, the 1k poly limit is not an issue. You have to break it up into logical sections anyway.

I wonder if this lightwave tool was used by ID becasue if you look at some of their unwraps they have some really weird shapes similar the the pictures shown on that website.

It's not a lightwave tool, it imports and exports obj files, so you can use it with any app.
You get the same weird pattern in UV maps if you use the manual morph map method of UVing in LW, so it's impossible to tell.
The results from this free program are MUCH cleaner than morph mapping method though, and 50x faster.
